Our new review on Antarctic bacterial natural products is OUT!

I am pleased to announce the publication of our review article in Natural Product Reports (2025, Vol. 42, pp. 774-787) titled "Antarctic bacterial natural products: from genomic insights to drug discovery".
The paper provides an in-depth overview of bacterial life in the extreme Antarctic environment, how long-term isolation and harsh conditions have shaped microbial genomes and biosynthetic potential, and why Antarctic soil microbiomes represent a largely untapped reservoir of specialised metabolites. RSC Publishing We highlight the ecological and evolutionary roles of these natural products, review current discoveries and the challenges inherent in exploring this remote biome, and advocate for systematic, collaborative efforts aligned with the Antarctic Treaty System and regionally defined biogeographic-zones. The article also emphasizes how modern omics-technologies, genome-mining and synthetic biology can bridge the gap from discovery to biomedical application.
A huge thank you to all my wonderful colleagues who made this paper happen — your ideas, enthusiasm, and teamwork were truly a joy to work with. Special thanks to Will Medeiros, Valéria Oliveira, Nadine Ziemert and Ludek Sehnal for such smooth, inspiring and fun collaboration throughout the whole process. I'm incredibly grateful to be working with people who make science both exciting and meaningful
