World Antimicrobial Awareness Week 2025

23/11/2025

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) remains one of the most urgent global health challenges of our time. Every year, more pathogens become resistant to available antibiotics, threatening the effectiveness of routine medical care and increasing the burden on healthcare systems worldwide. As researchers, clinicians, and citizens, we all play a role in addressing this issue — from antibiotic stewardship and public awareness to innovation in diagnostics, therapeutics, and microbial ecology.

This year, I was invited to speak within the World Antimicrobial Awareness Week about how academic research confronts AMR across scientific, medical, and societal levels. My talk covered the data on antibiotic prescription and consumption, the global rise and spread of multidrug-resistant (MDR) strains, and the urgent economic and regulatory obstacles slowing the development of new antibiotics. I also discussed how research—from molecular discovery and genome-mining to surveillance, prevention strategies, and the study of microbial life in extreme environments—can contribute to practical solutions and long-term resilience against antimicrobial resistance.
